Product Care & Cleaning

All of the products that we represent are fabricated from the finest materials, and with proper care will grace your home or yacht for years to come. This guide will address everyday care and provide helpful hints to ensure the longevity of your products.

To ensure the longevity of bedding we always recommend having 3 sets of sheets per bed and rotating them, with a set in the closet, a set on the bed, and a set in the wash. This will allow each set a rest from use and a rest from washing.

Some hair, skincare, and other beauty products, such as acne lotions, face creams, or toothpaste that contain oxidizing agents, may cause discoloration of colored sheets and towels. When using such products, it is safest to sleep on white bed linens and always try to wash off all makeup, sunscreen, and harsh skincare products before bed as strong chemicals can not only react to the dye but also damage fine fibers.

Washing of Bed, Bath, & Table Linens

Home laundering is recommended for all of our bed, bath and table linens, except where dry cleaning or other instructions are indicated on the product label.

Please be sure to read the care label on each item before laundering for the best results.

We strongly recommend that you pre-wash all bed, bath, and table linens before use. As fine fabrics are generally not pre-washed, this first wash is important for setting the threads, preserving the fabric’s beauty, and prolonging its life. Be sure to fully unfold, set the machine to include a cold pre-soak, and use minimal liquid detergent.

Washing terry towels before use begins the “breaking in” process, making them softer and more absorbent. Several washings are required for 100% cotton terry towels to achieve their maximum absorbency, softness, and fluff.

We recommend washing matching sets of bed linens, bath linens, and table linens together to allow them to wear at the same rate. Each piece should be cared for similarly to help maintain color consistency and brightness.

Avoid laundering your linens and bath towels with other items, particularly items containing polyester. Polyester “pills,” and will shed its pilling on natural fibers, diminishing the smoothness and softness of the fabric.

Avoid laundering your linens with items that have rivets, buttons, zippers, and other hardware that can damage your linens and bath towels in the wash. The added abrasion can break down the fibers over time, possibly resulting in pilling and other damage.

Delicate lace and embellished linens should be placed in a pillowcase or a mesh laundry bag before being placed in the washing machine. Professional hand washing is recommended for delicate linens and those with heavy embellishments or embroideries, heirlooms, or worn linens. Be sure to use a reputable launderer experienced with laundering delicate linens.

We do not recommend dry cleaning for natural cotton and linen products.

Jacquard-woven table linens are pre-shrunk with an easy-care finish. Dry cleaning is not recommended; laundering “relaxes” the fibers, which actually enhances the intricate, Jacquard-woven patterns

Dry cleaning is recommended for luxury fibers such as cashmere, merino wool, and alpaca. Dry cleaning helps avoid excessive shrinkage on formal top-of-bed items such as matelassé blanket covers. Be sure to use a professional dry cleaner with experience in natural fibers and luxury linens.

Always wash light and dark colors separately.

Pre-treat stains when they are fresh, prior to washing. If allowed to set, stains may be impossible to remove at a later date.

Do not overload the washing machine, as this can cause unnecessary abrasion to the fabrics and break long fibers like those in Egyptian cotton

Use a mild liquid detergent without added bleach, whiteners, or fabric softeners. Products with bluing agents or whiteners are not recommended on colored textiles, as they may progressively fade the colors. Bleaching whites may weaken fibers and cause yellowing.

Unless linens are very soiled, you need only use half the recommended amount of detergent.

Do not pour detergent directly on textiles. Add detergent to the water as the wash tub fills or dilute detergent with water, then add linens.

We recommend using our specially made luxury laundry care products by Le Blanc for all of your laundering needs.  LeBlanc’s products were created out of the necessity for a detergent that is triple concentrated to handle tough jobs but gentle enough to safely wash and preserve all textiles. And they work in cold water!

Machine wash on a gentle cycle.

Bed linens, whether cotton, pure linen, or a cotton/linen blend, bedding should be washed in cold water or warm water with a final cold rinse.

For bath linens, use warm water for whites and cold water for colors.

For table linens, use warm water with a final cold rinse for whites and cold water for colors.

Use of a fabric softener (liquid softeners or dryer sheets) is not recommended for any fine linens, as it coats and weakens natural fibers. Your luxury linens will soften naturally with frequent use and additional washings.

Fabric softeners will reduce the absorbency of cotton fibers and can damage your towels.

If the care label says “hand launder,” never machine wash. Hand wash in gentle soap. Rinse thoroughly in clean water to eliminate all soap residue, then line dry, lay flat (on towels), or hang to dry. Avoid wringing linens by blotting on towels before air-drying.

All-natural fibers will shrink slightly, ranging from 4 to 8% of the original size after a machine washing, depending on the fibers. Items washed and dried at high temperatures may shrink even more.  The sizing of the products we represent allows for expected shrinkage. We recommend that you do not wash on a hot setting which is most likely to cause over shrinkage.

Remove washed bed, bath & table linens promptly from the machine to help reduce wrinkling. Shaking damp linens out before drying will also reduce wrinkles and drying time.

Drying, Ironing & Storing of Bed, Bath, & Table Linens

Washing and drying your linens properly will eliminate many wrinkles, but fine linens made of natural fibers do wrinkle, particularly when new. As your linens become older and softer, you will find that they wrinkle less.

Natural fibers will wrinkle, but there are steps you can take while drying linens to minimize wrinkling. Line drying linens in outdoors is ideal—it is the gentlest method of drying—though this is not always practical.

To machine dry bed and table linens, gently shake out and smooth damp linens before placing in the dryer (unraveling any items that may have twisted in the wash cycle).

Avoid overloading the dryer so items will dry evenly.

Do not use dryer sheet fabric softeners.

Set your dryer on permanent press, which has a cool-down cycle at the end that helps reduce wrinkles. Most dryers have an air cycle that simply air-tumbles its contents without any heat.

Do not dry linens on a hot setting, Set to the lowest heat—high heat settings will weaken the fibers and increase shrinkage.

Do not overdry bed, bath, and table linens.

Tumble dry bed and table linens on low heat until slightly damp.

Tumble drying towels on low heat until slightly damp leaves them soft and fluffy while preserving the capacity for high moisture absorption.

Remove your bed, bath, and table linens from the dryer promptly while still slightly damp to reduce wrinkling. Smooth bed bath and table linens and let air dry before storing, finger pressing details like flanges on pillow shams, borders on flat sheets, edges of tablecloths or napkins, or press with an iron while damp to remove any remaining wrinkles.

Iron bed and table linens while still slightly damp.

Do not iron bath towels.

Lightweight honeycomb or waffle weave towels are loosely woven for absorbency, dry very quickly, and have been pre-shrunk.

For both bedding and table linens, using a good steam iron will make ironing easier.

Use a steam iron on a warm/hot setting for cotton or a hot setting for linen. However, you should always refer to the sewn-in label with the universal symbols for the appropriate setting for your iron.

Always check to make sure your steam iron is clean—mineral deposits may build up and cause brown spotting.

Avoid using spray starch, which has a tendency to adhere to the surface of the iron, and may also attract silverfish to the stored linens. Spray with water from a spray bottle for stubborn wrinkles, if needed.

To restore the lustrous face of sateen and jacquard fabrics, iron on the reverse side. This will enhance the pattern by increasing the three-dimensional appearance inherent in the woven technique.

To preserve the three-dimensional effect of embroidery, iron on its reverse side, atop a white towel to give soft support to the thread work design.

Linens with delicate lace and cutwork should be ironed beneath a press cloth.

If you cannot iron immediately, roll linens in a towel or a plastic bag and temporarily store in the freezer for up to 24 hours. This trick will make your linens easier to iron while preventing mildew.

Make certain that linens are not exposed to direct sunlight or moonlight to avoid color fading. Do not leave table linens on your table where they may be exposed to direct sunlight over an extended period of time.

Natural fibers need to breathe. Store bed linens in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area.

It is preferable to store linens on a flat surface. Store tablecloths rolled around cardboard tubes or hung on hangers (without plastic) to prevent crease marks from the setting, which can weaken fibers.

Linens stored long-term should be wrapped in white cotton, linen, or muslin (old pillowcases work well), or wrapped in acid-free tissue paper. Avoid storing linens in plastic bags or boxes, cardboard, or in cedar chests which can all cause permanent yellowing or streak fabrics. If the shelves are wooden, line them with tissue paper. Some woods, such as cedar, contain oils that can damage linens.

Care of Down Products

Duvets, pillows, and featherbeds should be fluffed daily to maintain the loft and fullness of the down. If stained, duvets and pillows can be spot cleaned with a damp cloth and mild soap. If featherbeds or silk duvets become soiled, dry clean only.

For complete cleaning of down duvets and pillows, it is recommended to launder rather than dry clean. Laundering rejuvenates the lofting quality of down, making duvets and pillows full, fluffier, and fresh smelling. You may wash down items in a front-loading, extra-capacity washer using a mild detergent in warm water.

Do not use top loading washing machines or the agitation may damage the delicate cotton cover.  Down duvets and pillows love drying in the sun. Spread them out on a sheet on the grass or deck, and shake them vigorously from time to time while drying. Or you may tumble dry in a dryer set on medium heat. Be certain your down duvets and pillows are thoroughly dry before returning to the bed or storage. Always store in cotton bags, never in plastic.  Use pillow protectors on down pillows, and wash the protectors regularly. A mattress protector over a featherbed is strongly recommended.

Care of Beaded Placemats, Runners & Coasters

Our beaded products are assembled and meticulously threaded, beaded, wired or sewn by hand. Gentle handling will help ensure the lasting beauty of your purchase.

The beauty of handmade and hand-dyed products is the unique variation found in each piece. Colors may vary slightly from one dye lot to another. Whenever possible, we recommend ordering the full amount needed, as a second shipment may not match exactly. All items are washed and tested prior to shipping to ensure that you receive the best quality possible.

To minimize the chance of beads being torn or ripped off the backing, place plates and utensils on the item gently.

Do not place hot dishes, cookware, or utensils on beaded placemats, chargers, runners, or coasters as plastic beads may melt, glass beads may crack, or finishes may be damaged.

Many beads, embellishments, and surfaces are dyed or finished with special coatings. To keep the color/finish from scratching or rubbing off, avoid sliding dishes and heavy serving pieces across the item, and do not use abrasive cleaners or cloths when spot cleaning.

Beaded placemats, runners, and coasters are backed in cotton and can be spot cleaned if necessary. Use a soft toothbrush dipped in soapy water to remove stains, blot dry, and iron on the back with a low iron to finish. Do not immerse products with wood beads or embellishments in water.

Occasionally, beads, sequins, and other embellishments may break or fall off of your item even with gentle use. While we do not provide a repair service, we do include replacement beads with most beaded items for you or your seamstress to use in case a repair is needed.

Care of Capiz Shell & Shimmer Placemats

Round and Ombre Capiz Placemats are made from hand-cut and assembled capiz shells, then hand-dyed (with the exception of the Natural color) and complete with a thick, smooth gloss resin finish.

Shimmer Placemats are made from crushed capiz shells, then hand-dyed (with the exception of the Natural color) and coated in a thick gloss resin finish. Because of the nature of the crushed shells, Shimmer Placemats have a slightly rippled surface.

Do not place hot dishes, cookware, or utensils on Capiz or Shimmer placemats.

Clean with a damp cloth (and mild soap if necessary).

Stack carefully when not in use to avoid chips and cracks.

Care of Acrylic Placemats & Coasters

Acrylic placemats and coasters will arrive with a protective film backing which should be removed prior to use. Acrylic scratches very easily.

Do not place hot dishes, cookware, or utensils on acrylic placemats.

Clean with a soft, disposable lint-free cloth and a cleaner made specifically for acrylic.

Do not use paper towels, scrubbers, or polyester or rayon wipes which are slightly abrasive and can scratch the finish.

Do not use window or countertop cleaners, or solvents such as rubbing alcohol which may leave a film or fog on the product.

Should scratches appear, gently buff out using scratch remover formulated for acrylic products.

Store in the protective sleeves provided or between tissue or lint-free cloth.

Care of Polypropylene Placemats, Runners & Coasters

Polypropylene placemats, runners, and coasters are made from two-ply polypropylene and are water-resistant.

Do not place hot dishes, cookware, or utensils on polypropylene placemats.

Clean with a damp cloth (and mild soap if necessary).

Avoid abrasive cleaners or cloths when cleaning.

Do not pull, stretch, or fold.

Avoid placing very heavy objects on top of the items to prevent indentations.

Care of Wood & Bamboo Placemats

Like other fine wood accessories, wood and bamboo placemats have a lustrous finish that enhances the beautiful wood grain patterns in the wood. Some styles may be hand-dyed, and due to the nature and varying porousness of each piece of wood, color may vary even within the same mat.

Do not place hot dishes, cookware, or utensils on wood placemats to avoid scorching.

Wipe clean with a damp cloth or wood cleaner/polish.

Avoid using abrasive cloths.

Do not immerse in water.

Care of Leather Placemats & Coasters

Leather placemats and coasters are made of genuine leather, so color variations are natural and no two will be alike.

Do not place hot dishes, cookware, or utensils on leather placemats.

Wipe clean with a damp cloth and allow to air dry thoroughly.

Avoid using abrasive cloths.

Do not immerse in water.

Once dry, store in a cool dry place away from direct sunlight.

Care of Enamel Chargers

Some chargers are handcrafted in metal and some styles feature hand-applied high-gloss enamel.

Do not place hot dishes, cookware, or utensils on metal or enamel chargers.

Clean with a damp cloth (and mild soap if necessary).

Do not use citrus-based cleaning products.

Stack carefully when not in use to avoid dents or chips and cracks in the enamel finish.

Care of Lacquered, Carved or Painted MDF Placemats

MDF styles are cut, carved, and painted by hand. No two will be exactly alike.

Fez MDF Placemats are finished with either paint or metallic foil leaf, then coated in high-gloss lacquer.

Do not place hot dishes, cookware, or utensils on MDF placemats.

Clean with a damp cloth (and mild soap if necessary).

Avoid using abrasive cloths.

Do not immerse in water.

Care of Faux Snakeskin & Shagreen Placemats

These placemats offer luxurious textures that are easy to care for, made with polypropylene and stitched to a stiff polyvinyl chloride backing.

Do not place hot dishes, cookware, or utensils on polypropylene placemats.

Clean with a damp cloth (and mild soap if necessary).

Avoid abrasive cleaners or cloths when cleaning.

Avoid placing very heavy objects on top of the items to prevent indentations.
